Rishworthians have been working hard in training ahead of the Yorkshire Two derby clash with Old Crossleyans at Copley. The team had been very downbeat after the defeat at league leaders Moortown, which robbed them of any realistic chance of winning the division. But with promotion still within their grasp they have been boosted in training by help from Yorkshire Carnegie’s Joe Ford, brother of Bath and England fly half George.

“The chance of being champions has now gone and we are focusing on gaining that second promotion spot,” said team manager Dan Ingham. “We’ve got over that defeat at Moortown and we are keen to try to go to the end of the season unbeaten,” he said. The first step in that aim is to win the derby clash, but Rishworthians know it will not be easy even though they won 39 – 7 at Broomfield in October. “Form means nothing in these derby matches. We might be in second and Crocs struggling near the bottom of the table, but it’s going to be a really tough task for us,” said Ingham.

They name a strong side, although Jacob Ford, brother of Joe and George is unavailable and Nick Faulkner is injured. But they welcome back centre Sam Nunn, who has been away with the North of England under-18 team.

Old Rishworthians players were stopped in their tracks when a newcomer turned up for training. Bath and England fly half George Ford dropped in on the club as they prepared for a crucial Yorkshire Two game at Ripon. His 18-year-old brother Jacob is currently playing fullback with Rishworthians and he joined him and the rest of the squad at training.

The England international was using some free time to call on Jacob and elder brother Joe, who plays fly half with Championship club Yorkshire Carnegie. George also had a special gift for one of Rishworthians' players and presented the club's Fijian-born centre Taniela Bakoso with the shirt of Fiji fly half Josh Matavesi, with whom he swapped shirts after England's recent 58 - 15 victory at Twickenham.

"We knew George was coming along earlier in the day, but we deliberately didn't tell the players. You should have seen their faces when he turned up," said team manager Dan Ingham. "He joined in and it was a great training session. All our players were so impressed.

There was a great turnout 40 plus at training on Tuesday evening as Sale Sharks player Joe Ford ran a special training session this week for players at Old Rishworthians. Joe is the brother of England fly half George Ford and both attended Rishworth School.
His involvement was arranged through Rishworthians’ new player-coach Chris Stone, who is hoping it will be the first of a number of training sessions being run by Joe Ford.
