Honours even against Wharfedale

The Rishworthian under 7s had a big squad of 21 this week to play Wharfedale in their penultimate match of the season. As has been the case throughout the year there were some great rugby skill skills on show from both the home and away team. Both teams were evenly matched and showed great attacking and try scoring skills with, at times, some fantastic last gasp defence.

Players of the week were Ronnie Darby, Harry Ellis, Oliver O'Connor, Daniel Smith and Joshua Cooke.

Ring rusty Rishies find it tough against a strong Wharfedale squad

With a four week break since Rishies last competitive outing it was always going to be interesting to see how the squad would resume after such a lengthy break, especially against a Wharfedale side who have consistently been strong opponents in previous seasons.

Rishworthians 4 - 26 Wharfedale
With the weather set fair and conditions underfoot the firmest they had been since October the generously proportioned pitch was sure to suit the fleet footed outside backs however Wharfedale are a team with pace in abundance and were quick to work the ball along the line to the wide open spaces and evade some weak tackling to open their account with two quick tries.

Rishies did respond swiftly with a gutsy effort from Lucas Fearnley who bulldozed his way over the line for a well deserved try, unfortunately this was to be the only bright spell in the first quarter as time and again Rishies failed to protect the ball allowing the opposition to steal possession with ease and carve through a fractured defensive line repeatedly.

The home side started the second quarter with renewed determination after a pep talk from the coaching staff but strong running from Jack Billington,Joe Wild and Lucas Fearnley was to no avail as all to often these one man efforts were just that, with no support following up to protect the ball and allow the scrum half to distribute.Leo Iribaren nipped in for a try,no more than he deserved after his sterling efforts in the ball snaffling department, but the huge efforts put in in defence by Will Town,Billington and Fearnley went unrewarded as to many players were guilty of standing back and allowing Wharfedale to pounce on the loose ball.

Freddie Shields danced his way over the line in the third quarter but the visitors were beginning to turn on the style, showing good hands, great feet, blistering pace and excellent defence and despite Jefferson Wilson-Pignataro spotting a gap down the blind side from a scrum and crashing over the line the final quarter was pretty much one way traffic.

With just one game left this season it is to be hoped the boys can finish with a more positive performance. They have showed some encouraging signs this season and have always been at their most dangerous when playing as a team.
