Match Report Saturday 30rd September - Championship North Merit League

After the frustrations of getting a team for Wharfedale, and then the close game against Heath, Rish Development finally kick started their Championship North campaign with a convincing 8 try thrashing of Selby 2.

Selby were a big set of lads, and, as Heath the previous week, looked to play through their forwards, and for the first 5 minutes or so kept play in Rishies half. Eventually though good play between the backs, and a final pass from Liam Normanton, sent Paul Savage over the line to score under the posts. Sam Bake made the conversion. Rishies quick back line were starting to influence the pace and numerous offloads found Oli Marshall with space to score. Minutes later centre Ben Sutcliffe made a superb run before sending Marshall in for his second. Bake again converted.

Rish switched off for a few minutes which allowed Selby to grab back a try. Just before half time Chris Flanagan zigged and zagged through the Selby defence before his well timed offload put Tom Cockroft under the posts. Bake added the conversion and at half time it was 26-5.

Half Time Rishworthians 26 - 5 Selby 2nds

Within minutes of the restart Rish went further ahead when Sutcliffe intercepted a pass and ran in from Selby 22 giving Bake an easy conversion. The Rish forwards were awesome in the contact and gave great platforms for the backs to constantly sweep upfield at pace. Typical interplay and offloads sent Normanton in for the try, and excellent play from our own line took us in to Selby 22 before being denied a certain try when the referee 30 yards back somehow saw a forward pass!

Rish became a tad frustrated with numerous erroneous refereeing decisions, but still managed to finish the game with 2 further tries from Normanton and Flanagan.

Rishies should be very proud of the way they dominated the whole game. Defence was superb from everybody, with special mention for Josh Illingworth, who was a tackling machine, and gave a man of the match display. In attack, the pace, offloads and support play from the backs constantly ripped holes in the Selby defence.

With further players set to return and bolster the squad, we hope to take the confidence from this display in to the home game next week against high flying West Leeds.
